The Myth of the Magic Jersey

21 Oct 2025

Can a Maap jersey really make you a minute faster?

now as the owners of a cycling brand we are not here to shit on others, Maap makes some exceptional kit. No disputes.

But It’s hard not to raise an eyebrow when a brand claims a jersey will save you 60 seconds over 100 km at 40 kph. That’s Maap’s promise with their new aero jersey, a minute shaved purely through fabric and fit. It’s an impressive feat of textile engineering, no doubt. But here’s the rub: how many of us actually ride 100 km at 40 kph?

For most everyday cyclists, that’s pro-level pace. Even on flat, fast group rides, the average sits closer to 32–35 kph. Which means the “minute saved” shrinks to a few seconds a gain you’d barely notice between traffic lights or café stops.

Still, there’s something undeniably compelling about this level of design. It reflects how far cycling apparel has evolved where even marginal gains are part of the story we tell ourselves when we ride. The aero cut, bonded seams, and textured sleeves don’t just promise speed, they make you feel fast. And maybe that’s what really matters.

So the question is when brands bring out jerseys, bibs etc like this, does the average cyclist care?
